Our History

Three Generations & 100 + Years of Providing Quality Service

The Company was established in 1920 by Mr James Kirkby as a coal & fruit transporter. It developed into general transport from its former South Liverpool base until Mr Kirkby’s grandson, Gary assumed control in 2000, when his father James retired. New premises at a convenient North Liverpool location were occupied in 2002.

Since becoming Managing Director, Gary has concentrated on modernising & developing the business by constantly updating the fleet of vehicles & trailers. Today, he leads one of the foremost liquid bulk transport operations in Northern England.

With 40+ years of training & experience, Gary has a thorough knowledge of every sector of the industry. In addition to overall responsibility, he personally looks after marketing & sales, vehicle, trailer & other acquisitions.

Quality Management System

A keynote of Gary's tenure has been the introduction of the now mature Quality Management System ISO9001, which guides every aspect of the business.

Safety, Quality & Sustainability

Our business has consistently gained above average scores in the European Chemical Industry led ''Safety, Quality & Sustainability'' assessment (SQAS) & obtains relevant ARD Dangerous Goods Certifications.

Transport Management System

Quay Transport controls its business using the sophisticated ''Haultec'' computer system. Haultec controls & records all traffic movements through booking allocation to vehicle & driver, issuing proof of delivery & producing invoices. In addition, maintenance & defects are controlled by the system.

Gary Kirkby

Managing Director

Gary, the third-generation family member to own and lead the Company & is aged 54. Gary became fully involved in the Company from a young age, including working as a driver, running daily operations & working within the maintenance of vehicles & trailers. Gary has 40+ years of experience & thorough knowledge of every sector of the industry.

Lee Woolrich

Director & Transport Manager

Lee has more than 25 years’ experience in the transport industry. Joining Quay Transport in 2002 & working alongside Gary Kirkby he has built up an in-depth knowledge of bulk liquid transport, container transport & meeting customer needs.

Mark Wooliscroft

Lead Operations & Administration

Mark has been with the company for more than 10 years & is fully committed to his role in making sure all customers’ requirements are fulfilled & everything runs smoothly daily working closely with Lee Woolrich, Josh Draper & Lee Roberts.

Company Secretary & Accounts Manager

Dawn has been with the company for more than 10 years & is fully committed to her role completing all her bookkeeping/accounts training in conjunction with our long-term accountant partner Abrams Ashton.
